Timor-Leste prepares for 2029 ASEAN presidency
Timor-Leste is intensifying efforts to maximize the economic benefits of its membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Foreign Minister Bendito Freitas stated that while full membership in 2025 opened new opportunities for regional and international economic cooperation, the nation must strengthen its internal preparation and realistic economic assessment to participate effectively in ASEAN mechanisms.
During a fifth interministerial coordination meeting chaired by Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, government officials discussed preparations for Timor-Leste to host and lead the ASEAN summit in 2029. Discussions focused on necessary improvements in infrastructure, logistics, and institutional capacity. Vice-Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Francisco Kalbuadi Lay provided updates on essential infrastructure projects required for this upcoming presidency.
