Timor-Leste prepares for election cycle with UN support and new CNE leadership

Timor-Leste is preparing for a significant electoral cycle, with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão meeting with United Nations representatives to discuss support for upcoming presidential, municipal, and legislative elections scheduled for 2027 and 2028. The discussions focused on providing assistance to the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Support (STAE) and the National Elections Commission (CNE), as well as engaging civil society. The UN is currently leading a mission to identify specific electoral needs following a request from the Timorese government.

In a related development, the Timorese parliament has re-elected José Belo Pereira as president of the National Elections Commission (CNE) for a five-year term spanning 2026 to 2031. The vote, which included support from the governing coalition and the opposition KHUNTO party, passed with 45 votes in favor and 15 against. This re-election is viewed as a key step for democratic consolidation and the country's international standing within ASEAN and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
