Timor-Leste President addresses UN on conflict impunity and human rights

During the United Nations General Assembly, Timor-Leste President José Ramos Horta addressed the international community regarding the human cost of global armed conflicts. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate criticized the tendency to view civilian casualties as mere statistics, stating that the world has reached a “moral quagmire” by failing to act against the impunity of those causing loss of life in regions such as Gaza and Sudan.

Ramos Horta concluded his speech by reading questions from ten Timorese children and adolescents, urging world leaders to prioritize peace and recognize the human faces behind conflict data.

In a separate diplomatic development at the assembly, Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel met with his Timorese counterpart, Bendito Freitas. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and reviewing the recent ministerial meeting of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). Discussions also touched upon Portugal’s upcoming mandate on the UN Security Council, which begins in January.
