Timor-Leste signs United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime

Timor-Leste has signed the United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime. The agreement was signed in New York by Foreign Minister Bendito Freitas during the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

The move follows recent government efforts to dismantle several online fraud centers within the country. In recent months, police have detained hundreds of foreign nationals, primarily from China, Cambodia, and Indonesia, suspected of involvement in illegal internet activities, including fraudulent schemes and illegal gambling.

To bolster its defenses, the Timorese government is developing new cybersecurity legislation and has established the Interministerial Commission for Cybersecurity and Digitalization of State Services. Additionally, the government has approved the National Integrated Plan for the Prevention and Combat of Transnational Digital Financial Fraud Networks.
