Timor-Leste to host CPLP Justice Ministers meeting

Timor-Leste is set to host the 19th Conference of Justice Ministers of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) on October 26 and 27. Justice Minister Sérgio Hornai announced that the meeting will focus on combating organized crime, specifically targeting fraud centers and illicit schemes that have recently impacted the country and the broader region.

In a separate domestic development, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão met with Afonso Carmona, the President of the Court of Appeal. The meeting aimed to discuss institutional relations and coordination between state organs while respecting the separation of powers. This meeting follows criticisms from judges and civil society regarding Carmona’s leadership of the Superior Council of the Judicial Magistracy, including allegations of irregularities in disciplinary processes and judicial recruitment.
