Timothy Geithner: Former US Treasury Secretary’s Career Overview
Timothy Franz Geithner, born August 18, 1961 in New York City, earned a B.A. from Dartmouth College (1983) and an M.A. from Johns Hopkins (1985). He began his career at Kissinger Associates (1985‑88) before joining the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he held a series of senior positions from international economist to Undersecretary for International Affairs (1988‑2001). From 2003 to 2009 he served as president and chief executive of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and was a vice‑chair of the Federal Open Market Committee. In November 2008 President‑elect Barack Obama nominated Geithner as Treasury Secretary; he was confirmed in January 2009 and served until January 2013, overseeing the response to the financial crisis. After leaving office, Geithner returned to the Council on Foreign Relations as a distinguished fellow and later became president of Warburg. He remains active on the boards of the Ford Foundation and the International Rescue Committee.
