Timothy Grenadier avoids jail for assault of father

Timothy David Grenadier, 36, has avoided a jail sentence following an attack on his 71-year-old father at their Macquarie Hills home. While originally facing attempted murder charges, prosecutors accepted a plea to a lesser charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm during proceedings at the Newcastle District Court.

The incident occurred on April 22 last year when Grenadier, who told a psychologist he had “finally snapped,” attempted to place a plastic bag over his father's nose and mouth while the victim was sleeping. The ensuing struggle resulted in the victim sustaining bruises to his arms.

Judge Roy Ellis noted that Grenadier had no prior criminal history and had since participated in counseling. Acknowledging that the defendant was unlikely to reoffend, the judge placed him on a 20-month intensive corrections order.
