Timoti Snajder criticizes Trump foreign policy and ties to Putin

Professor Timoti Snajder has characterized Donald Trump’s foreign policy as a ‘suicide of a superpower,’ citing the strategic failure of the war against Iran. According to Snajder, the conflict has allowed Iran to escalate tensions, knowing the United States would not commit to a land invasion. This has forced the U.S. to reduce its military presence in the Middle East and withdraw strategic bombers from the United Kingdom.

Snajder argues that these geopolitical shifts have provided Trump with excuses to favor Russia. He notes that Trump has largely fulfilled Vladimir Putin’s objectives by suspending arms sales to Ukraine and recently agreeing to purchase Russian diesel. While Trump has blamed Ukraine for rising fuel prices in the United States, Snajder points out that Russia continues to target Ukrainian energy infrastructure with ballistic missiles and drones.
