TIMP2 protein identified as key to restoring brain immune function

Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have identified that the youth-associated protein TIMP2 is critical for maintaining the healthy function of microglia, the brain’s primary immune cells.

In studies involving mice, the depletion of TIMP2 led to signs of premature aging, including increased inflammation, cellular stress, and a diminished ability to clear cellular waste. Conversely, systemic administration of TIMP2 in aged mice helped shift microglia away from pro-inflammatory states and restored their ability to clear debris.

These findings provide a potential molecular mechanism for addressing age-associated neurodegeneration, such as Alzheimer’s disease, by targeting the functional state of the brain's immune cells.
