Timur Turlov elected FIDE President

Timur Turlov has been elected president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) during the General Assembly in Samarkand. Turlov, the founder and CEO of Freedom Holding Corp. and president of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, defeated German businessman Wadim Rosenstein in a second-round vote of 110 to 85. At 38, he is the first representative from Kazakhstan to hold the position and the second-youngest president in FIDE history.

Turlov succeeds Arkady Dvorkovich, who served two terms from 2018 to 2026. Former world champion Viswanathan Anand was elected as Turlov’s running mate for deputy president.

The FIDE Council for the 2026–2030 term has also been announced. The leadership includes Vice Presidents Yuhua Xu (China), Michael Khodarkovsky (USA), Pavel Kolobkov (Russia), and Yassin Souleiman Hassan (Djibouti). Additionally, the President has nominated several members to the Council, including Luigi Maggi as Treasurer and Bouchra Kadiri as Secretary of the Council.
