Tina Romero debuts with queer zombie comedy Queens of the Dead

Director Tina Romero is set to release her debut film, Queens of the Dead, which blends the zombie genre with the aesthetics of nightlife and queer culture. Described as a ZomCom music video rollercoaster, the film features a colorful, kitsch-driven style that incorporates elements of gore alongside glitter and glamour.

The plot follows a group of characters, including a drag queen and a DJ, who must navigate personal conflicts and social tensions within a club setting when a zombie apocalypse breaks out during a mall party. The film serves as a commentary on modern culture, specifically targeting influencer narcissism, smartphone addiction, and the loneliness found within hyper-connected societies.

While drawing stylistic parallels to the work of her father, George A. Romero, Tina Romero describes the film as an inclusive, genre-crossing experience that addresses serious themes such as the opioid epidemic and identity politics through a self-aware, non-serious lens.
