Tinchant family history explores slavery and emancipation in new book

Authors Jean Hebrard and Rebecca J. Scott have released a new historical work titled ‘De l’esclavage à la liberté. L’odyssée des Tinchant, 1793-1945’, published by Gallimard. The book traces the multi-generational saga of the Tinchant family, beginning with Rosalie, who was taken from Senegambia and enslaved in Saint-Domingue in the late 18th century.

The narrative follows five generations of the family across various regions, including the Caribbean, the United States, Mexico, France, Belgium, and Germany. It highlights the family's journey from slavery toward emancipation, including the story of Édouard Tinchant, a cigar merchant in Antwerp, and his great-niece Marie-José, who was killed by the Nazis at Ravensbrück.
