Tinder launches Group Hangouts to facilitate group-based dating
Tinder has launched ‘Group Hangouts’, a new feature designed to facilitate social interactions through group-based dating. Moving away from the traditional one-on-one swipe model, the tool allows users to create group profiles of up to 15 people centered around specific activities. When two groups mutually ‘like’ each other, a shared chat is opened to coordinate real-world plans.
The strategic shift aims to combat user fatigue and declining engagement. Tinder reported a 7% drop in monthly active users during the second quarter, following an 8% decrease in the previous period. Early testing in Australia showed that 40% of Group Hangouts invitations were accepted, and women were found to be 2.2 times more likely to ‘like’ a group profile than a solo one.
Safety features have been integrated to allow members to leave conversations or block participants. The feature is being rolled out in the United States and selected markets, building upon the company’s previous ‘Double Date’ concept to foster more low-pressure, social-first dating experiences.
