Nigeria: President Tinubu pledges refinery revival and diaspora investment

President Bola Tinubu has announced several key economic initiatives aimed at stabilizing and growing the Nigerian economy. At the Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference (NIDEC) 2026 in Toronto, Canada, Tinubu urged Nigerians living abroad to move beyond sending remittances for consumption and instead pursue productive investments in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, technology, and energy.

In the energy sector, the President assured the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) that the nation's refineries will be revived through a systematic, evidence-based restructuring process to ensure they are commercially viable and profitable. Additionally, the administration plans to expand the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative to lower transportation costs and enhance energy security.

On the regulatory front, Tinubu signed the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA) Bill, 2026, which provides the Nigerian Shippers' Council with stronger legal authority and enforcement powers to oversee the port industry. Tinubu also noted that the country's economic reforms are showing progress, citing a 3.89 percent real GDP growth in the first quarter of 2026, an easing of inflation to 15.91 percent, and foreign reserves closing 2025 at 45.4 billion US dollars.
