Tiny Tourism emerges as a niche alternative to mass tourism

A growing trend known as ‘Tiny Tourism’ is emerging as a counter-movement to mass tourism. Rather than visiting famous, crowded landmarks, travelers are increasingly seeking out small, niche, and authentic experiences to avoid the pressures of overtourism seen in destinations like Venice, Barcelona, and Mount Everest.

In Berlin, this is exemplified by visits to the ‘Freie Scholle’ workers' settlement in Waidmannslust, a site founded by Gustav Lilienthal and expanded by Bruno Taut, where visitors focus on local history and architecture. Other examples of this minimalist approach include treehouse hotels in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, which emphasize nature and tranquility, and the ‘Nindri Indri’ luxury resort in Slovenia’s Prekmurje region, which utilizes a regenerative model in collaboration with Birdlife Slovenia to promote nature conservation.

The shift toward more conscious travel decisions is driven by the increasing strain on traditional holiday hotspots and the environmental and social impacts of large-scale tourism.
