Tioman Island infrastructure improvements prioritized for 2027 Budget
Infrastructure improvements on Tioman Island have been identified as a key focus for the 2027 Budget following engagement sessions with industry players. Discussions led by Minister of Finance II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, centered on enhancing basic facilities to strengthen the island's tourism sector and local economy. Priority areas include road upgrades, clean water supply, telecommunications coverage, and critical health facilities.
Local operators highlighted urgent needs regarding solid waste management, pollution control, and the requirement for incinerator plants to ensure ecosystem sustainability. Challenges such as water shortages, liquid waste, and transportation limitations—including the lack of a suitable airport—currently restrict island operations to approximately six or seven months per year.
In a related development, Telekom Malaysia (TM) launched an upgraded slipway facility at Kampung Mukut to improve safety for students participating in sailing training. This initiative is part of the Jangkau Digital TM program, which aims to expand digital connectivity, education, and entrepreneurship support across Tioman Island.
