Tipper drivers reject 70% sand and gravel charge hike

The National Sand and Stone and Tipper Drivers Association (NSSTD) has rejected a proposed 70 percent increase in sand and gravel loading charges by NASSTTU Sand Winners. The association described the hike as unjustified and warned it could cause tensions within the construction sector.

According to the NSSTD, a verbal understanding had previously been reached during a meeting involving the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the Minerals Commission, which stipulated that any price adjustments should be decided through stakeholder round-table discussions. The association is calling on authorities to intervene and review the pricing structure to prevent arbitrary charges.

Additionally, the NSSTD reported allegations of assault, harassment, and extortion involving its members by officers from the National Intelligence and Security Operations (NAIMOS). The group has urged the Minerals Commission to conduct a thorough audit and investigation to ensure transparency and protect the rights of drivers and customers.
