Tipra Motha Party gains major lead in Tripura village elections

Ahead of the village committee elections scheduled for September 28 in the tribal areas of Tripura, the ruling alliance has secured a significant advantage. The Tipra Motha Party (TMP), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has won approximately 34 percent of the total seats uncontested.

According to officials from the Tripura State Election Commission, out of the 4,597 seats across 587 village committees within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) region, 1,557 seats were won unopposed by TMP candidates. Additionally, the BJP secured 81 seats uncontested.

Following the withdrawal of 1,069 candidates, voting will now take place for 2,954 seats across 44 blocks in eight districts. A total of 9,820 candidates remain in the race, including 4,279 from TMP, 2,151 from the CPI(M), 1,853 from the BJP, and others from the Congress and IPFT. The elections, held after a 10-year interval, face reported tensions and instances of violence in various districts.
