Tips for international travel with infants and young children

Traveling internationally with infants and young children requires careful planning regarding safety, accommodation, and transit. Pediatrician Shannon Thompson of Cleveland Clinic Children's emphasizes that while traveling with children presents new challenges, parents should focus on safety and comfort to enjoy the journey.

When selecting accommodations, parents are advised to verify the availability of cribs, high chairs, and portable playpens. For safety in homes with stairs or pools, inquiring about baby gates or bringing portable mesh barriers is recommended. Essential packing items include outlet covers and cleaning wipes.

Regarding sleep safety, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises that infants under one year old should sleep on their backs on a flat, firm surface, such as a crib or playpen, using only a fitted sheet. For the first six months, it is recommended that babies sleep in the same room as their parents but not in the same bed.

For air travel, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency recommends using approved car seats for children rather than sitting on a parent's lap, which may require purchasing a separate seat. Additionally, security regulations typically exempt infant food, such as formula, breast milk, and purees, from the standard 100ml liquid restrictions.
