Tips for managing underarm irritation and skin discoloration

Common underarm issues such as itching, dark patches, and razor bumps can be addressed through lifestyle and grooming adjustments. According to Unilever R&D scientist Matt Annecharico, shaving is a primary trigger for irritation because it removes the top layer of skin, increasing sensitivity. Sweat and friction can further aggravate the area, while products with a high pH may also contribute to discomfort.

To manage these issues, experts suggest wearing breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo to keep the skin cool and dry. For dark underarms caused by friction, pigmentation, or dead skin buildup, regular exfoliation and hydration are recommended. One suggested home remedy involves applying a mixture of turmeric and plain yogurt to soothe irritation and even out skin tone.

To prevent ingrown hairs, it is advised to shave with the grain using a sharp blade and moisturizing shaving gel, followed by the application of a soothing balm to calm the skin.
