Tips for optimizing home WiFi and signal strength

Improving home WiFi performance often depends more on signal distribution than the speed of the fiber connection itself. To optimize coverage, routers should be placed in a central, elevated location, away from the floor and enclosed furniture. Physical obstructions such as thick walls, mirrors, fish tanks, and large appliances can significantly weaken the signal.

Users can manage interference by keeping routers away from microwaves and cordless phones. Utilizing different frequency bands is also key: the 5 GHz band offers higher speeds for nearby devices, while the 2.4 GHz band provides better range for distant connections. For larger homes or multi-story buildings, mesh WiFi systems or Powerline adapters (PLC) are more effective than basic repeaters.

When using WiFi amplifiers or extenders, it is crucial to ensure the primary router is functioning correctly and positioned optimally first. Improperly placed extenders may fail to improve connectivity. Additionally, ensuring hardware compatibility—such as using devices that support WiFi 5 (802.11ac) or higher—and maintaining vertical antenna orientation can help maximize coverage and speed.
