Tips for preserving citrus fruits and understanding banana moisture
To prevent citrus fruits like lemons and mandarins from molding quickly, consumers should avoid storing them in mesh bags, which can facilitate the spread of mold. It is also recommended to keep them away from apples or tomatoes, as the ethylene gas emitted by those fruits accelerates ripening. Ideal storage temperatures for citrus are between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, rather than in a refrigerator, which can damage aroma and consistency.
Regarding bananas found in supermarkets, moisture on the peel is often a physical result of temperature changes during transport rather than a sign of spoilage. When ripe bananas are cooled too significantly, water vapor condenses on the peel. While approximately 80 percent of bananas sold in Germany originate from Ecuador, Colombia, and Costa Rica, the presence of moisture is typically linked to the ripening process and condensation during transit.
