Fruit preservation techniques for peaches, citrus, and bananas

Various methods for extending the shelf life and quality of common fruits have been identified. For peaches, it is recommended to keep unripe fruit at room temperature and move them to the refrigerator only once they have reached maturity. To prevent spoilage, peaches should be stored in a single layer to avoid bruising and should not be washed until immediately before consumption to prevent mold growth.

Citrus fruits, such as lemons and mandarins, are prone to mold, especially if their natural protective layer is damaged during washing. To maintain freshness, it is advised to remove them from mesh packaging, avoid storing them near ethylene-producing fruits like apples or tomatoes, and keep them in a cool, dark place between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius rather than in a refrigerator.

Bananas require specific handling to prevent rapid darkening. While wrapping stems in plastic film may help reduce ethylene release, the most effective method is keeping them in a cool, dry, and ventilated area away from direct sunlight. While bananas can be refrigerated once fully ripe to extend their edible period, the peel may darken due to the cold. Additionally, moisture on banana peels in retail environments is often a result of condensation during the cooling process rather than spoilage.
