Tips for selecting juicy citrus fruits

When selecting mandarins or oranges, weight is a more reliable indicator of juiciness than color or size. Experts suggest that when comparing two fruits of similar size, the heavier one is likely to contain more juice, whereas lighter fruits may be dry.

Color is not a definitive indicator of sweetness or ripeness, as skin color depends on the specific variety and growing temperatures. Some ripe citrus may even have greenish tints. For optimal quality, consumers should look for fruit that is firm to the touch but not hard, and avoid specimens with soft spots, wrinkles, or mold.

Additionally, a fresh citrus scent near the stem can indicate ripeness, while a lack of aroma or a fermented smell may suggest the fruit is not ready or has begun to spoil. To preserve citrus at home, it is recommended to store them in the refrigerator in a fruit compartment rather than in airtight plastic bags, which can trap moisture and encourage mold.
