Tips for selecting the right perfume
Selecting perfume effectively requires understanding how scents evolve on the skin. Many consumers make the mistake of purchasing based on initial impressions or testing scents on paper, which fails to account for how fragrance interacts with individual body chemistry.
Fragrances consist of multiple layers. The initial top notes are often the most striking but dissipate quickly. To truly understand a scent, one must wait 15 to 30 minutes for the middle and base notes to emerge. Factors such as skin moisture, temperature, and pH levels mean that the same perfume can smell significantly different on different people.
Experts recommend testing fragrances directly on the wrist or inner elbow and waiting at least 20 to 30 minutes before deciding. For the most accurate representation of how a scent settles, observing it for one to two hours is ideal. Additionally, it is advised to limit testing to a maximum of three scents at a time to avoid olfactory fatigue.
