Albania sees Euro hit historic low against Lek amid economic shifts

Albania is experiencing significant economic shifts, most notably a sharp decline in the value of the Euro against the local Lek. The Euro has hit historic lows in exchange points, dropping below 90 Lek in some commercial banks, despite an official rate of approximately 92.44 Lek. This trend is attributed to high foreign currency inflows from tourism, remittances, and foreign investment, alongside improvements in the balance of payments.

The Bank of Albania has intervened by withdrawing 95.5 million Euro from the market to stabilize the exchange rate, with plans to purchase up to 450 million Euro by year-end. While the strengthening Lek benefits importers and those with Euro-denominated debts, it poses challenges for exporters and businesses operating in foreign currencies.

In other sectors, the Albanian national football team has seen a market value decrease of approximately 30 million Euro over the last two years. Additionally, food prices in Albania remain high; despite agriculture accounting for nearly 15% of the GDP, many essential food groups are more expensive than the European Union average and regional neighbors.
