Tire change advice: avoiding unnecessary costs and timing seasonal swaps
Drivers are advised to be cautious regarding additional services offered during seasonal tire changes. Some common add-ons, such as nitrogen inflation or tire shine treatments, may offer negligible practical benefits compared to their cost. While nitrogen can theoretically maintain pressure longer and reduce internal oxidation, the differences in daily use are often imperceptible since atmospheric air already contains approximately 78 percent nitrogen.
Regarding the timing of seasonal changes, a traditional German custom known as the ‘O bis O’ rule suggests installing winter tires in October (Oktober) and using them until Easter (Ostern). While this cultural practice helps drivers plan ahead to avoid busy workshop schedules, it is not a legal requirement. In Poland, many drivers rely on the 7-degree Celsius rule, though changing tires based on actual road conditions and upcoming weather forecasts is often more effective.
