Tire recycling facility fire in Merced County sends hazardous smoke into air

A large fire broke out Monday afternoon at the American Tire Recycling, LLC facility in Ballico, located in Merced County, California. The blaze produced massive plumes of hazardous black smoke that were visible across the Central Valley, including from the nearby community of Winton.

The Turlock Fire Department and Merced County fire crews responded to the scene, issuing a smoke advisory due to the nature of the burning materials. Officials warned residents in the Turlock area to expect smoke and strong odors, advising those with sensitive respiratory conditions to exercise caution and stay away from the area.

The California Highway Patrol closed Newport Road between Sunny Acres Avenue and East Avenue, with no immediate timeline provided for reopening. Authorities noted that because of the materials involved, the fire was expected to continue burning for an extended period.
