Tirol and South Tyrol implement traffic restrictions to manage congestion
Authorities in the Alpine regions of Tirol and South Tyrol are implementing measures to curb traffic congestion on regional roads.
In Tirol, driving bans on specific secondary routes have been reinstated as of May 1, 2026. These restrictions are designed to prevent travelers heading toward Italy from using smaller local roads to bypass highway traffic jams, a practice that has increased the burden on local residents. The bans apply to selected routes in the districts of Innsbruck, Kufstein, Imst, and Reutte. To assist with enforcement, traffic police feed these restrictions into the Ministry of the Interior’s information system, allowing navigation providers to reroute drivers accordingly.
In South Tyrol, the municipalities of Wolkenstein and Corvara are planning to establish a traffic-calmed zone at the Grödner Joch (Passo Gardena) starting in 2027. The proposed measure would restrict access to the 11.6-kilometer stretch between Plan de Gralba and Kolfuschg from May to October. Access would be limited to authorized persons, such as residents, local business guests, and visitors with pre-booked parking. While a digital test was conducted in late 2026, a final decision from the South Tyrolean provincial government regarding specific access groups is still pending.
