Tirol implements traffic restrictions and truck metering to manage transit congestion
The Austrian state of Tirol has implemented traffic restrictions to manage heavy transit volumes, particularly during peak summer and winter travel seasons. To prevent travelers from using small local roads to bypass highway congestion, the state has introduced driving bans on specific secondary routes in the districts of Innsbruck, Kufstein, Imst, and Reutte.
A key component of this management is the “block processing” (Blockabfertigung) of heavy goods vehicles. Trucks exceeding 7.5 tons are metered at the Kufstein-Nord area on the A12 Inntalautobahn, with approximately 250 vehicles permitted per hour. This measure is intended to prevent the overloading of the regional road network.
These restrictions often cause significant traffic backups extending into Germany, specifically affecting the A93 motorway between Brannenburg and Kiefersfelden. Authorities feed these driving bans into navigation systems to ensure GPS routing avoids restricted local roads, forcing non-regional traffic to remain on the main motorways during congestion periods.
