Tamil Nadu Muslims hold mass prayer for rain in drought‑hit Tiruchirappalli
On August 1, more than 2,000 Muslims gathered at the Uzhavar Sandhai grounds in Thennur, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, to perform Salat al‑Istisqa, a special prayer for rain. The ceremony was led by Tiruchirappalli District Jamaathul Ulama Sabha President Muhammad Noorul Haq Rashadi and Secretary Aamul Hasan Hazrath, and participants prayed with tears, seeking relief from the severe drought.
The prayer comes as Tamil Nadu faces acute water scarcity: temperatures above 37.5 °C, a failed monsoon, reduced Cauvery River flows, and drying lakes and ponds that threaten farmers, livestock and drinking water supplies. In response, the state government, under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, issued a July 28 order forming an expert committee within the Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency to monitor the expected strong El Niño event and advise on measures to mitigate drought, flood and extreme‑rainfall risks.
