Tirzepatide may activate calorie-burning brown fat

Research led by Marion Peyrou suggests that tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound, may improve metabolism by directly activating brown adipose tissue. While the drug is known to promote weight loss primarily through appetite suppression by targeting GIP and GLP-1 receptors, this study indicates it also triggers metabolic changes independent of calorie restriction.

Using an experimental mouse model, researchers compared obese mice treated with tirzepatide against a control group receiving the same amount of food. The study found that tirzepatide activated brown fat, which specializes in burning energy, rather than white fat, which stores it. This activation increases the body's capacity to burn glucose and fat and produces beneficial batokines.
