Tisza Party proposes December 24 as public holiday in Hungary

Three representatives from the Tisza Party have submitted a legislative proposal to the Hungarian Parliament to officially designate December 24 as a public holiday. The proposal aims to promote family togetherness and respect the Christian origins of Christmas by allowing for a more peaceful and community-focused celebration.

If passed, the law would mandate that most retail stores remain closed on December 24. However, several exceptions are proposed to ensure the continuity of essential services. These include restaurants, accommodation providers, flower and confectionery shops, gas stations, and businesses operating within transport hubs like railway stations, bus stations, and airports.

The proposal suggests the change could take effect as early as 2026, though some reports indicate it could potentially be implemented as early as this year if the parliamentary process allows. While the Tisza Party advocates for the change to enhance work-life balance, some critics have expressed concerns regarding the potential need to make up working hours on other days, such as Saturdays.
