Argentina fossil discovery reveals titanosaur nesting habits

A study published in Royal Society Open Science reveals that titanosaurs, some of the largest dinosaurs to ever live, were capable of reproducing in high-latitude regions far from the equator. Researchers analyzed fossilized eggs and shell fragments unearthed in the Chorrillo Formation in southern Argentina, dating back approximately 68 million years.

While most dinosaur fossils are found in warmer, lower-latitude regions, these findings suggest that these long-necked sauropods could nest in cooler environments. Because their massive size would have prevented them from brooding eggs directly, scientists believe they utilized a clever incubation strategy. The most likely scenario involves laying eggs in mound nests composed of soil and vegetation, where the heat generated by decomposing organic material provided the necessary warmth for development.

Darla Zelenitsky, a paleontologist and associate professor at the University of Calgary, noted that while bones of these animals have been found in diverse locations ranging from Antarctica to Texas, this discovery confirms they also nested in higher latitudes.
