Tito Karnavian reviews village head term extension requests

Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian is reviewing a proposal from approximately 36,000 village heads requesting an extension of their terms of office. The group, known as the Village Heads at the End of Term (AMJ), represents leaders whose terms are set to expire between 2027 and 2029.

Jaro Muhadi, the national coordinator for the group, stated that extending terms would improve budget efficiency by reducing the costs associated with Village Head Elections (Pilkades). The group argues that longer tenures would allow them to focus more effectively on national priority programs, such as the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program and the Red and White Village Cooperative (KDMP).

Minister Karnavian noted that the government is currently studying the positive and negative impacts of such a policy before proceeding with further discussions.
