Latin America faces widespread utility and fuel crises
Various regions across Latin America are facing significant utility crises, including fuel shortages, electricity outages, and water scarcity.
In Bolivia, the removal of diesel subsidies has led to a 382% price increase in less than a year, causing logistics paralysis and impacting northern Argentina due to commercial interdependence.
Electricity supply issues are widespread. In Argentina, residents in La Plata and Orán report frequent blackouts, voltage surges, and disputes with distributors like Edelap and Edesa. In Venezuela, merchants in Caripito report 7 to 8-hour daily outages that damage equipment and disrupt commerce. In Mexico, residents in Tizimín are demanding solutions from the CFE due to recurring nighttime outages caused by insufficient transformer capacity.
Water shortages have also been reported in Paraguay, where residents of Capiatá faced four days without water, prompting calls for better state oversight and infrastructure maintenance.
