TJ Friedl elects free agency after disappointing season with Reds
Cincinnati Reds outfielder TJ Friedl has elected free agency following a difficult 2026 season. The 31-year-old player faced multiple setbacks during the year, including two demotions to Triple-A and being designated for assignment in September.
Friedl’s offensive performance struggled throughout the season, with his batting average peaking at .203 in early May. He also experienced defensive regression in terms of arm strength and sprint speed. His tenure with the Reds was marked by a notable underdog narrative; after being mistakenly overlooked in the 2016 draft, he signed with Cincinnati and eventually earned a 10th-place MVP vote in 2023.
Injuries, including hamstring and wrist issues in previous seasons, contributed to his recent decline. The Reds finished the season in last place in the NL Central.
