TJ Maxx closes several US locations as part of retail footprint rebalancing

TJ Maxx is closing several prominent store locations across the United States as part of a strategic footprint rebalancing. The closures primarily target high-rent urban areas as the retailer shifts focus toward more profitable suburban and secondary markets.

Confirmed closures in 2026 include a three-story location on Newbury Street in Boston, Massachusetts, which closed in early January after nearly a decade. In Maryland, the company has shuttered locations on Colesville Road in Silver Spring and Vocke Road in Cumberland. The Boston closure was noted in a Massachusetts WARN notice affecting 117 workers.

Despite these specific shutdowns, parent company TJX Companies remains in strong financial health, recently reporting a 4% increase in consolidated comparable sales during its second fiscal quarter. Company spokespeople stated that the decisions are part of an ongoing assessment of real estate strategies rather than a sign of broader financial instability.
