Temascalcingo fireworks explosion kills 10 during religious festival
A pyrotechnics explosion during a religious festival in Santa María Canchesdá, Temascalcingo, has resulted in at least 10 deaths and dozens of injuries. The incident occurred on the night of Saturday, September 5, during celebrations for the patron saint, Nuestra Señora de la Luz.
The blast originated in a room near the local parish used for storing fireworks, causing the immediate collapse of the structure and part of a perimeter wall. The debris fell on congregants participating in the festivities. Official reports from the State of Mexico government confirm 10 fatalities, with some reports noting that one victim died later at a hospital in Atlacomulco.
Casualty counts for the injured vary by report, with official state figures citing 64 injuries, while updated health reports have indicated the number reached 81. Among the injured are children, adolescents, and elderly individuals. Two local priests, Fernando Chávez Cruz and Javier Sánchez Montes, were also injured but are reported to be out of danger.
Emergency response efforts involved local, state, and federal agencies, including the Mexican Army, National Guard, and various civil protection units. The State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
