Puebla authorities dismantle massive illegal crypto mining farm

Mexican authorities have dismantled a massive clandestine cryptocurrency mining operation in the municipality of Tlaola, located in the Sierra Norte region of Puebla. A joint operation involving the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), the Secretaría de Marina (Semar), and the Secretaría de Seguridad Pública of Puebla led to the seizure of approximately 300 specialized computing units (GPUs) that were actively processing digital assets.

Investigators are examining several potential crimes, including the massive theft of electricity. Reports indicate the facility may have been illegally connected to infrastructure associated with a federal hydroelectric complex near Nuevo Necaxa. The high energy demands and noise generated by the equipment were noted as factors that could lead to detection in remote areas.

Furthermore, authorities are investigating whether the virtual assets generated by the farm were used for money laundering or to finance illicit activities. The seized equipment includes a pedestal transformer, roughly 80 medium-voltage terminals, and eight satellite internet antennas. The property and all technological components remain under the custody of the Federal Public Ministry as investigations continue.
