Tlaxcala government negotiates with farmers over maize prices

The Government of Tlaxcala is engaged in dialogue with agricultural organizations and farmers to address several pressing demands. A primary objective is to secure the continuation of the Guarantee Price for white maize, a mechanism previously established with the federal government to improve commercialization conditions for local producers.

Farmers have also raised concerns regarding drought in certain regions and the potential use of anti-hail machines. While government officials stated that inspections have not yet confirmed the use of such devices, they have committed to ongoing monitoring. Some demands, particularly those involving international trade agreements and specific maize varieties, fall under federal jurisdiction, prompting the state government to send letters of support to federal authorities.

Conversely, representatives from various social and agricultural sectors have criticized the administration, claiming that dialogue tables have failed to produce concrete results or effective commitments. Protesters have also denounced the use of state police during demonstrations as a form of intimidation and raised broader grievances regarding water access, land property, environmental issues, and judicial irregularities.
