Mexico updates safe abortion guidelines and reports drop in adolescent pregnancy
Mexico’s Ministry of Health has updated its technical guidelines for safe abortion services to emphasize human rights, reproductive autonomy, and gender perspective. The 2026 edition aims to reduce barriers to access by promoting outpatient procedures, such as medication-based abortion and Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA), at the primary care level. This strategy is intended to expand territorial coverage and reduce the hospital burden.
In the state of Tlaxcala, Governor Lorena Cuéllar Cisneros reported a nearly 50 percent decrease in births among adolescents aged 15 to 19. This achievement was recognized by the National Population Council (CONAPO) during commemorations for World Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Day. The state government continues to focus on prevention through expanded educational and sporting opportunities for youth.
Additionally, health authorities in the State of Mexico have emphasized the importance of providing non-judgmental sexual and reproductive health services to adolescents and young people to prevent unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.
