TMC 26 conference highlights smart vehicle technology and new trucking regulations

The Australian Trucking Association’s 2026 Technology and Maintenance Conference (TMC 26) has commenced, focusing on the integration of connected vehicles, workshop safety, and leadership in heavy vehicle operations.

During a keynote address, PACCAR Australia Chief Engineer Brad May discussed the evolution of trucks into smart vehicles driven by safety and emissions requirements. He highlighted how modern trucks generate vast amounts of data through electronic control units and sensors, allowing the vehicle to act as a ‘source of truth’ for maintenance and operational analysis. May suggested a future where trucks possess their own intelligence to interact with connected services.

The conference also addressed recent amendments to the Heavy Vehicle National Law that took effect on 1 August. These regulatory changes include new requirements for accredited operators to maintain documented safety management systems, increased general mass limits, and provisions for certain heavy vehicle combinations to operate at lengths of up to 20 metres. Additionally, the ATA is reviewing the heavy vehicle defect notice system to reduce operator costs while maintaining safety standards.
