TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee questioned by Enforcement Directorate over teacher recruitment scam

Trinamool Congress leader and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Kolkata after being summoned in connection with the multi‑crore primary teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal. He was questioned for several hours, stating that the probe agency had interrogated him for 8‑9 hours the previous day and 11 hours on the day of his appearance.

The ED is investigating alleged financial misconduct and procedural violations in the recruitment of primary teachers, having attached properties worth roughly Rs 154 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Earlier actions included the arrest of former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and the seizure of cash and gold jewellery linked to the cash‑for‑jobs scheme. The Supreme Court has also quashed the appointments of more than 25,000 teachers and staff, declaring the recruitment process tainted. The investigation continues to trace the money trail and identify intermediary entities involved in the alleged scam.
