Trinamool Congress MP Prakash Chik Baraik resigns from Rajya Sabha

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik submitted his resignation to Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan, stating, “I do hereby resign from the membership of Rajya Sabha, which may please be accepted with immediate effect.” His departure is the third TMC upper‑house resignation in a week, reducing the party’s Rajya Sabha strength to ten members. Baraik, a tribal leader from West Bengal, thanked the Chair and Secretariat for their support during his tenure.

The resignation comes amid a broader party crisis following the TMC’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Earlier in the week, Rajya Sabha MPs Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Sushmita Dev also quit the party and the Upper House. More than two‑thirds of the party’s MLAs have broken away to form a rival legislative bloc led by expelled member Ritabrata Banerjee, who has dismissed rumours of a merger with the Congress. Rebel MPs claim the backing of over 20 Lok Sabha members. Baraik denied pressure from the BJP, saying, “I am not being pressurised by the BJP.” The series of resignations highlights internal discord and could further weaken the Mamata Banerjee‑led TMC in Parliament.
