West Bengal TMC faces internal crisis as leaders dispute opposition role and party leadership

The Kolkata High Court on 12 June heard a petition by expelled Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay questioning how a legislator dismissed by his party can continue as Leader of the Opposition. The court examined the legality of the Assembly Speaker’s decision to recognise Rituparna Bandyopadhyay in that role and sought clarification from the state government.

Amid the legal dispute, Bihar minister Ramkripal Yadav publicly declared that the "existence of TMC is over," blaming unrest caused by party leader Abhishek Banerjee. He warned that senior TMC figures such as Kalya Banerjee were leaving the party.

TMC MP Kalya Banerjee, speaking on 11 June, accused Abhishek Banerjee of arrogance and demanded that party supremo Mamata Banerjee choose between him and the nephew. He highlighted a lack of communication on a court‑filed case involving a signature‑mismatch investigation against senior TMC legislators.
