TMMOB marks 47th anniversary of engineers and architects' strike

The Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) has issued calls for solidarity to mark the 47th anniversary of the September 19, 1979, work stoppage action. Regional branches in Edirne and Trabzon highlighted that despite the decades passed since that historic protest, engineers, architects, and city planners continue to face severe professional and economic challenges.

Representatives stated that a deepening economic crisis, high cost of living, low wages, unemployment, and job insecurity are worsening the living conditions of technical professionals. The organization noted that many experts are being forced into non-professional work due to financial pressures.

Furthermore, the union criticized current employment and economic policies, citing concerns over the reduction of public investments, privatization, and subcontracting. They emphasized that a lack of technical personnel in the public sector and the erosion of professional oversight pose risks to public safety and urban planning integrity.
