TNB electricity bill protection expanded to 800kWh threshold

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) domestic users in Malaysia are expected to see electricity bill reductions of up to RM47 per month, or approximately 13 percent, starting in October. This follows a government decision to expand electricity bill protection by raising the monthly consumption threshold from 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 800 kWh.

The measure, which applies to electricity usage from September through December 31, 2026, will benefit more than eight million domestic users, representing up to 90 percent of TNB’s customer base. Users within the new threshold will be exempted from the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) charge, the eight percent Sales and Service Tax (SST), and the RM10 retail charge.

TNB CEO Datuk Shamsul Ahmad stated that the expansion covers nearly one million additional users to help ease cost-of-living pressures. TNB expects to bear a financial impact of between RM120 million and RM150 million to cover these exemptions. Reductions for September usage will be credited to consumers' October electricity bills.
