Tænketanken Hav reports tons of medicinal runoff entering Danish seas

An analysis by the think tank Tænketanken Hav reveals that approximately 4.9 tons of medicinal substances are discharged into the Danish marine environment annually. The study focused on 13 key substances, including painkillers, antidepressants, antibiotics, and contraceptive pills.

When humans consume medication, a portion of the active ingredients is excreted and enters wastewater treatment plants. Many of these substances are not fully removed during the purification process, leading them to be released directly into the sea or incorporated into sewage sludge used as fertilizer on farmland.

Henriette Selck, a senior consultant at Tænketanken Hav and professor of ecotoxicology at Roskilde University, noted that these substances can have similar biological effects on marine animals as they do on humans. To mitigate the impact on marine biodiversity, the think tank suggests the implementation of more advanced water purification technologies.
