TNS Catcher missing crew member found dead in Pohang

One of the missing crew members from the TNS Catcher tugboat capsizing has been found dead on a beach in Pohang. The body of a 56-year-old Korean 2nd engineer was discovered on July 9 near Dogu Beach, approximately 100km away from the original accident site near Oryukdo, Busan.

The Coast Guard identified the deceased through digital forensics of a mobile phone and smartwatch, as well as precision fingerprint analysis. The accident occurred on July 2 when the 286-ton tugboat capsized while towing a large container ship, subsequently sinking to a depth of 87 meters.

Of the eight crew members on board, one Indonesian sailor was rescued, and one Korean crew member died at the scene. Five crew members remain missing. Due to worsening weather conditions, the Coast Guard has expanded its search area to include the waters under the jurisdiction of the East Sea Coast Guard in Gangwon and Gyeongbuk provinces.
